​While books were produced probably a few thousand years ago, the first printing press was invented in Germany, around 1440 A.D. by Johannes Gutenberg, which started the a knowledge revolution, because it was extremely expensive, and only very wealthy people could afford any of them.

Years after the invention of the Gutenberg Press, and positive iterations later, books became available to the layperson, and literacy slowly began to increase through the Renaissance period.
